The Ten Laws of Natural Health

I just wanted to share with everyone this amazing list of “to do’s” from Dr. Lorraine Day, an orthopedic surgeon who contracted advanced breast cancer, almost died and healed herself using alternative cures. This, by no means should replace your current medical treatment, but should definitely be added to your daily health regimen:

1. Eat a totally vegetarian diet 3 times a day–fresh fruits, raw vegetables, whole grains in their natural state. No meat, poultry, dairy, nothing processed, canned or boxed. Your diet should consist of 75-80% raw fruits, vegetables and 13 8-ounce cups of fresh squeezed juice: 8 servings of carrot juice with apple, 1 cup orange juice, 4 cups of green leafy vegetables (with apple). Take these between meals (one serving approx every hour). Many people cannot eat too many raw vegetables. Buy a juicer if you don’t have one and juice all of your vegetables and add one apple to add a delicious flavor to it. It is easier to “drink” your vegetables.

2. Exercise daily. It relieves depression, increases circulation, enhances immune system, eliminates toxins, and increases oxygen inside the body. Cancer and other illnesses cannot thrive in an oxygen rich body.

3. Drink water. The standard is to take 8 glasses a day. The more accurate measure is to take 1/2 your body weight in ounces. For example, say you weigh 140 pounds, you should take 70 ounces of water – almost 9 glasses (8 ounces each) per day. The “water” can include liquids like juice or tea (not coffee). The lack of drinking water is one of the main causes of cancer growth.

4. Take in about 10 minutes or more, of sunlight–it lowers blood pressure, anxiety, improves the body’s ability to handle stress, cures ulcers, increases production of growth hormone and decreases arthritic pain. It’s also a source of natural vitamin D.

5. Abstinence or avoidance of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, sugar (white & brown table), chemicals like saccharin, NutraSweet, splendid, MSG and other preservatives and salt (use sea salt instead). For a sweetener, use Stevia, honey or pure maple syrup instead.

6. Go outdoors and inhale fresh air daily. Indoor air is toxic.

7. Have at least 7-9 hours of sleep. For cancer patients, 9 hours of
sleep is required (I’ve been guilty of not doing this because of the poor
excuse of being too busy)

8. Trust in God. Give your problems, your worries and your life to Him. It will aleve you of stress. Let go of anger, resentment, and any other negative emotion. These negative emotions will keep one from healing.

9. Have the attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for all that you have (don’t even think about what you don’t have).

10. Benevolence. Do something for someone who can’t pay you back.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Holiday and a New Year filled with lots of health, happiness and longevity! Many blessings to you all!

Getting Rid of Nausea During Chemo

I speak from experience when I say that, ugh, I think the worst part of chemo was the nauseous feeling, the queasiness that just wouldn’t go away! I found a few things helped and I wanted to share them. Make some (or have someone make it for you) chicken soup with rice and add some ginger. Ginger really helps with nausea! My mother-in-law makes an amazing Filipino chicken soup with ginger that was wonderful and was the only thing I could really eat the days right after my chemo sessions. The other thing that really helped (and thanks Suzanne for this great tip!) was Welch’s frozen juice bars! For some reason the cold, refreshing bars, numbed my queasiness and made me forget I was feeling sick! Also, my friend Mylene bought me some Queasy Pops – yummy little candies made with ginger, in assorted flavors – I highly recommend these as well. They’re not available in mnay places, but I found them in a couple of health food stores and on Amazon!
Last but not least, and this has nothing to do with food, rent some funny movies and laugh! Believe it or not, getting your mind off of how you’re feeling and seeing something hilarious, puts you in a different state of mind and you feel better automatically! Your whole body and your cells are happier and heal faster too! I rented old favorites like “Airplane” and “Caddy Shack” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and old “I Love Lucy” episodes and many others! It’s true, sometimes laughter IS the best medicine!!

Vitamins and Herbal Supplements – Keep Your Body Strong!

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for everyone to get some really good/high quality vitamin supplements and start taking them right away. Especailly if you’ve been recently diagnosed with cancer! Before you undergo any type of chemo or radiation or any kind of surgery, you’ve got to prepare your body and have it run at its optimum. Dr. Schulze’s products are truly wonderful – I seriously live by them! Even if you’re not sick they will PREVENT you from getting sick! I take Dr. Schulze’s Superfood Plus
and have been for the past 2 years. I started out with their powdered fom and made my “super shakes” (and they were easier to keep down during chemo) and now I do the tablets. I have not had a flu shot in the past 4-5 years and I don’t plan on getting one this year, because, honestly I don’t think I’ll need one! I might get the sniffles or a sore throat/cough, but it’ll be gone within 2-3 days!
I also take my MODIFILAN
capsules every day, along with my Flor Essence Herbal Tea
– both of which detox the body (especially after radiation) and strengthen all my cells. In addition to that, I take my vitamin D3 capsules (really important for breast cancer survivors), take my ginseng and green tea capsules (a booster/helper for Tamoxifen, if you’re on that, and wonderful anti-oxidents regardless), take my Co-enzyme Q-10, extra vitamin C and E (more powerful anti-oxidents for the bod) and drink my aloe vera juice every couple of days! Oh, I could go on and on about the other supplements I’ve taken and still take, but I’ll spare you the details and just refer you to my Health page which has all of that info! Be well and feel great!! 🙂

Staying Healthy During the Holidays!

Today, I wanted to talk a little about preparing for and staying healthy during the holidays.
First and foremost, eat smart! We don’t have to overeat and feel stuffed and sluggish afterwards, like you’re about to burst! There will be plenty of food around until the end of the year and beyond. If you want to try a bit of everything, that’s fine, just take little portions. Stuffing yourself creates undue stress on all of your organs, especially the digestive system. Your body will thank you if you limit your intake. Also, and big bonus here – you won’t have to go on a diet after the holidays!
Next, try and get a little more excercise during the winter. As humans, we tend to go into “hybernation” mode during the cold months and that’s how we become sluggish and gain weight. I know, I know, it gets dark early, it’s cold outside, etc, but seriously, taking a walk around your neighborhood to see all the pretty lights and Christmas decorations isn’t so bad, right? Or go out dancing, or jump on your Wii Fit Balance Board – every little bit helps.
If anyone asks you what kind of gift you’d like for Christmas or Hanukkah, ask for a “good for you gift” like a Wii Sports game, or a juicer, or a steamer, or a gym membership or a set of Yoga classes, or a massage, or a facial! Treat yourself – we’re getting ready to start a whole new wonderful year!
Also, don’t forget to take your vitamins, drink plenty of green tea and get enough rest – we’re coming into the flu season and you want to stay healthy during the holidays! You may also want to add a supplement to help boost your immune system. Check out my Health page for some options.
Last but not least, be grateful for everything in your life! Sometimes you forget how many wonderful people and things you have in your life until you get sick – I’m speaking from experience. So, in this season of giving thanks, remember to thank God and/or the Universe for everyone and everything, especially your health!!

Beating Cancer with Nutrition

The above title is not just what you can and should try to do, but an amazing book that has helped me immensely through my fight with breast cancer!  Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Patrick Quillin was pretty much my “get well bible”. It is packed with stories of patients – some who were given a limited time to live by their doctors – who decided to keep trying and keep living by embarking on a strict diet which incorporated fresh, wholesome and organic food and high potency nutritional supplements. I’ve listed some of these on my “Health” page, but there are so many more mentioned in this book. The book also has plenty of helpful hints and recipes for meals that are fairly easy to make and are so good for you! There’s also a summary section and a CD – an added bonus designed to provide a short cut lesson for those who don’t have the time or energy to take in the entire book (I listened to the CD while I was recuperating from my chemo sessions). If you or someone you love are battling with any type of cancer, this book is a MUST! I highly recommend it!

The Importance of Colon Cleansing and Detoxing

This is for EVERYONE, not just post cancer patients. A healthy colon is essential to good health, which makes doing some sort of a colon cleanse, parasite cleanse, and a herbal detox (try Dr. Schulze’s) a must! Everything we eat eventually ends up in our bowels as toxins. As these toxins build up, we end up with various diseases, such as being overweight, constipation and candida and other more serious conditions.

If you’re reading this, you might be suffering from some sort of ailment – it might be constipation, acne, Candida, brain fog, headaches or just a constant feeling of sluggishness or tiredness. Believe it or not, the above ailments are related to a sluggish/unhealthy colon in one way or another. Why? Because the colon is one organ that indirectly and directly affects all the other organs in the body. When it’s clogged up, the liver can’t do its job properly. When the liver isn’t working efficiently, the kidneys suffer, etc. So to start curing our symptoms and to feel better, we must first start cleansing the colon.  For most of us, our colon isn’t in the best state – filled with mucous, toxins, and even microscopic parasites! Not a pretty picture, I know. How did we reach this state? Through a combination of poor food, poor lifestyle choices and bad living conditions.

For instance, most Americans consume way too much protein – hamburgers, steak, hot dogs, cold cuts, etc. Protein is necessary, but too much can lead to over-acidity – which is not good for the colon or the rest of our body.

Many of us also overeat. We all know that weight gain and obesity are a huge problem in the US. Additionally, eating too much in one sitting can have serious long-term effects. Overeating leads to an overuse of enzymes, that can cause our poor sluggish colon to work even harder!

Don’t even get me started on the sugary processed foods we eat on a daily basis – cookies, cakes, doughnuts, candy, etc. These were not meant to be eaten by man in the first place and create a breeding ground for candida, yeast infections and parasites! Sounds lovely, right?

OK, I’ll get off my soap-box – it’s time to start eating better and to start a colon cleanse right now! If you’ve never done one before , try a mild, all natural one like The Ultimate Colon Cleanse from Organica Research (link on the right) and drink plenty of water! Cancer patients, PLEASE check with your doctor first, before starting any kind of cleansing program – I don’t want it to interfere with any medication you might be taking. Everyone else, go to it! And while you’re at it, do a colonic or two as well! Be well!

Hydration During Chemotherapy

A lot of people have asked me “so how bad was chemotherapy?” I’m not going to lie to anyone and say that it was a piece of cake – it was hard for me. BUT, different people and body types react differently. My mom, when she had it several years before me, tolerated it much better than I did. Also, it all depends on what kind of chemo you get – some are milder than others and some people don’t even lose their hair! The most important thing is to drink a ton of water to keep hydrated during the proccess and get lots of rest. That’s in addition to taking good supplements and eating really healthy food (preferably organic). In addition to water, I drank a LOT of pure, freshly made vegetable and fruit juices. My husband and I bought two kind of juicers – one for citrus fruits and one for vegetables and apples – and we juiced every day! Despite all of the fluids I was getting I still had two episodes of dehydration and had to be taken to my doctor’s office for intravenous rehydration. So drink as much as you can (and I don’t mean alcohol!). Post cancer, you will also notice that the more fresh, spring water you drink, the more your skin will feel younger and plumper/smoother and you’ll just feel better overall! So get accustomed to carrying a water bottle in your hand! 🙂

The evil flu bug is gone!

Ahhh, finally, I’m feeling much better!! Thank you Dr. Schulze for your amazing supplements (see my health page)! It took a week to shake this nasty flu bug off, but after drinking gallons of green tea, taking lots of vitamin C and Dr. Schulze’s Super Food Plus (along with lots of rest), I feel human again! Take care of yourselves and use hand sanitizer whenever you’re out in public – it really does help kill those nasty germs!

Hello Universe!

Greetings!

This is my first blog ever and I want to share all my knowledge and experience regarding post cancer health, in hopes that I can introduce ideas and natural products to everyone to help promote healing and inspiration.
